S.T.E.M. Lesson

This was a S. T. E. M. challenge for students to build their own fishing rods using materials, such as wooden spoons, sticks, yarn, tape, and magnets. This lesson ties with our science standard of magnets. Students followed the S.T.E.M. Design Process starting with asking themselves the problem, "How can I create a fishing rod using the given materials to go fishing?" (They had to fish for toy fish that I put magnets on). Then they brainstormed their ideas and planned their design by drawing and labeling their design in their S.T.E.M. Journals. Next, the students got busy creating their designs and testing them. Everyone was successful! We then thought about how we might improve our design. The kids had a blast!

Math Journals

Practicing addition word problems in our math journals!

Place Value - Tens and Ones

Practicing place value, tens and ones, with partners.

Retelling

One of our standards in first grade is learning how to retell a story. For this activity, students retold the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Students practiced with a partner,  by themselves, and for the teacher. Some students were able to share their retelling over the projector screen to the whole class. We had fun listening to each other retell the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Book Buddy Food Craft

Today we met with our book buddies and read the book, Snowmen All Year by: Caralyn Buehner. After we read the book, we created  snowmen cookies with our book buddies! Look at how cute they turned out!

Let's Go Fishing!

In this fun activity, students were given various objects to create a magnetic fishing tool. The students were to use their knowledge about magnets to create a tool that they could use to 'go fishing.' After the students created their tools and 'caught their fish,' they wrote an informational piece of writing on 'How-to Create a Magnetic Tool.' The students then shared their writing to the class. Check out the creativity in this classroom!

Marshmallow Measurement

We have been learning how to measure with nonstandard units. Here we are measuring with mini-marshmallows and big marshmallows. This activity helped us to compare the measurements with the different sized units. Fun!

Mystery Reader

We had our first Mystery Reader come to visit! The students were excited to listen to three spooktacular books! The students also enjoyed these delicious treats. Thank you to the family that came in to volunteer! The students really enjoyed the stories and the special treat!
